In June and July of 2024, I launched one of my biggest projects yet, the Waste to Art Project.
Fuelled by PMHC Community Funding and supported by the Wauchope Chamber of Commerce, the project encouraged people to find the beauty hidden in waste and turn discarded materials into stunning works of art. It included a professionally curated exhibition, engaging workshops, and celebratory events, bonding residents of the Hasting Community.
Over 20 artists, from absolute beginners to established artists, showcased their innovative work at the Wauchope Art Gallery. Transforming shoes, plastic strapping and even a parcel post bag into stunning art pieces, one highlight was a large interactive crown that invited attendees to become part of the exhibition.
The project not only celebrated creativity but also encouraged a circular economy, demonstrating the inherent beauty and value in waste.
Two workshops showed how to repurpose materials to create art: one utilised Preloved Makeup to create vibrant art on paper and the other involved creating assembled sculptures using discarded objects.
Through significant participation and media attention, the Waste to Art Project challenged perceptions of waste, inspired a deeper appreciation for both creativity and our environment, and helped bring the Port Macquarie Hastings Community together.
